THAT OTHER CHALLENGER: With UP 3985 in Houston this week (June 5, 2004), I thought some might like to see some photos of another surviving Challenger, UP Challenger No. 3977. This locomotive is happily sitting in Cody Park in North Platte, Nebraska as part of other Union Pacific car displays, including EMD 6922, RPO 2069 and Baggage 1350. It is a nice railroad display park, which my wife and I visited June 2, 2004. Union Pacific donated and installed this locomotive at the park on October 19, 1968. It is still painted in the grey paint with the UP yellow stripes.

Still painted in the two-tone grey with UP yellow stripes and lettering.

Closeup of number under fireman's window and the engineer's seat inside.

Fireman's side showing controls and view looking ahead out of the cab.

Engineer's seat plus two views of inside the firebox plus a view looking ahead from the engineer's seat. This is what Steve Lee and others would see much of the time. My car can be seen just to the right and ahead of the engine.

3977's builders plate and UP baggage 1350 at the park.

UP RPO 2069 and a look inside.
