September 3 and 4, 2002, including the Union Pacific Steam Shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

BNSF coal train eastbound through Glendo, Wyoming, September 2, 2002.

These photos were taken Monday, September 2, 2002 of the Cheyenne, Wyoming depot, being renovated. The lower right photo is of the northside of the UP roundhouse from downtown Cheyenne - I visited the UP Shops and roundhouse the next day, September 3, and these follow below.

Tuesday, September 3, 2002. The top left shows the UP steam shops from where I parked the car. The upper right is the 3985 steam locomotive having some minor work done on it. The other photos are of the 844, which is undergoing major renovation. Note the bottom photos - the front of the engine is on the opposite side. In the lower right photo you can see the 3985 to the left.

Here are two more photos of the 3985.

The above photos were all taken at Union Pacific's Steam Shops and Roundhouse in Cheyenne, Wyoming, September 3, 2002, the Tuesday after Labor Day. Some of you might recognize Lynn Nystrom of UP Steam in the lower right photo - if you've ridden on any of our UP excursions in the 1990s, you would recognize him. His and other offices of UP Steam are located behind the door to the right of him inside the shops. The photos show work being done on the 844 and 3985 steam locomotives, plus scenes of some of the equipment inside the shops.
There are lots of railroad equipment on the site, including my favorite the red MKT boxcar. I was given a release form, and I walked all over the immediate yard area - you drive to the shops into the yard, crossing some tracks on the way, much the same way you would do in the North Little Rock UP yards.
Nothing was said about future excursions, but they are still working on both locomotives none the less.
While there, I caught a UP freight passing Cheyenne's beautifull renovated station, from the vantange point of the UP shops.

Got this picture of UP's Big Boy No. 4004 in a Cheyenne park.

A stopped UP freight (for lunch maybe?) at Bennett, Colorado on September 3, 2002. There were sunflower fields all over eastern Colorado and into Kansas.

UP had a crew point at Oakley, Kansas and I stopped to get some photos on Wednesday, September 4, 2002.

Dodge City, Kansas, September 4, 2002. They are renovating the old Santa Fe depot and Harvey House plus the Santa Fe freight house is now a restaurant. Note the sign on the van. We visited Boot Hill while there, but mostly Dodge City is a tourist trap.
