These were taken Fri-Sun, October 3-5, 2003 in south Kansas. Unfortunately,
my train shots occurred just after sunset on each day and even though you
can see the trains fine, they are blurry since I had to open the lens too
much (I had other plans during the daytime - namely taking my wife to several
quilt shops in the area.) Railroads included are the Kansas & Oklahoma
in Haven, Kansas (between Wichita and Hutcinson near Yoder) and a long BNSF
freight blasting through a crossing at 70 mph near Burrton, Kansas (yes, two
r's), which is off US50 between Newton and Hutchinson on the route of the
Southwest Chief. There was a perfect sunset at the time this train went by.
Kansas & Oklahoma tracks (according to the Kansas railroad map) show
the reflecting sunlight at 656 pm, Friday October 3, 2003. A long K&O
train was approaching from the west heading for Wichita. This site is just
off Kansas-96. This line is a former Missouri Pacific line.
The train gets closer. This is the lighting I had to work with - I took
a spot reading off the ground and got the following photos of the train passing
almost 7 pm.
I can't quite read the locomotive number, but the train was moving about
35 mph and with the lens wide open, it blurred. This track was jointed rail.
Again, this was at Haven, Kansas, near Yoder. (Yes, mister. engineer....your
horn works fine!! I could hear again about an hour later)
Zipping away. The sunset scene upper right was taken in front of the Carriage
Crossing Restaurant in Yoder - the crossing signals are on the same line as
the train was, a few miles to the west.
BNSF crossing sign near Burrton, Kansas.
A BNSF freight speeds toward Newton, Kansas at 706 pm October 4, 2003. It
must have been doing 70 mph. The crossing is near Burrton, Kansas.
This digital photo in completely unenhanced, taken right after the train
went by near Burrton, Kansas. Time was about 710 p.m. The tracks are to the
right.
Sterling, Kansas depot now used by a law firm, October 4, 2003. I didn't
look up the railroad name.
Painted boxcar at Yoder, Kansas along the K&O.
