Some scenes of Houston's Metrorail
system, mostly on November 2, 3 and 7, 2004. I was in town with my wife
to attend the International Quilt Festival. I was in contact with
Railspot member Howard Bingham while there. An all-day pass cost just
$2 for the 7-some mile system. The northern end of the line is on the
UH-Downtown campus. You can walk to the Amtrak station from there and I
have scenes of this station included.

Heading toward downtown on San Jacinto Blvd past the Patrician Bed and
Breakfast, where we stayed. This is located on the corner of San
Jacinto and Southmore. We were in the room with the patio, so
every 6 minutes during the day I could hear the train pass.

View from our patio.

Ground level on San Jacinto heading toward downtown.

Near the Museum District.

At Hermann Park.

Inside a car of the Metrorail train.

Passing Reliant Stadium. In the foreground is the original Astrodome.

Downtown Houston on Main Street heading for the Fannin South station.

Northbound toward the University of Houston Downtown end of line stop.

End of line at UH-Downtown. This was on November 7, a Sunday. Frequency
was about every 18 minutes.

From the UH buildings, you can see the Sunset SP line, here looking
west.

You can walk down a stairway to track level and walk to the Amtrak
station in the distance.

There were lots of footprints in the gravel leading to this point at
the Amtrak station.

View of Amtrak station. The old abandoned Jefferson Davis Hospital in
in the distance.

According to Thomas Kline: "This old abandoned building by the Houston
Amtrak station is the old Jefferson Davis Hospital. As it looks,
it's been there forever and abandoned for almost that long :) It
has even outlasted the "new" Jeff Davis hospital built to replace it in
the 1950's, which was torn down four years ago. A classic
building in a town that can't figure out what to do with such
structures. "

"Intrepid" on siding near the Amtrak station. Later that night, more
private cars were moved here.

Back to board Metrorail. Here's the route stopping points.

Got a seat in the front with a view looking forward through the locked
door of the operator's compartment. This is Main Street heading
toward Fannin South.
