SUNDAY,
MAY 4 AND MONDAY, MAY 5, 2003 at Union Station in Little Rock. Included are
two GE units, a B30-7A plus a B23-7M (only 3 left in UP's fleet according
to Railspotter Bob Smith). They were on
the southbound UP local to Gurdon Monday evening. The train went into emergency
just after it passed Union Station, but was soon on its way again. The engineer
of 219 told me they were GP38's, so that's what I put down - guess I need
to get a UP roster! Thanks to all who corrected this error, including Bob
Smith, Michael Gitlin, Joe Enochs, Bryan Flint and Robert Currie.

It's now Monday evening, May 5, 2003 at 739 pm and I had to open the lens
up quite a bit. First train I saw was headed by CN5748.
At 742 pm May 5, a lashup of 20-25 year-old GE's. According to
Railspot member Bob Smith, the lead unit UP#219 was MP#4820 built Dec. 81.
Model is B30-7A. There were only 55 of these that went to UP from Missouri
Pacific in Merger. In fact the very first MoPac locomotive to be painted
yellow and gray with Union Pacific lettering and the new UP number using
"North Little Rock" style lettering was UP 208 (MP4808). The other locomotive
(#257) is one of only 3 GE B23-7Ms in UP's fleet. Also former MoPac. It was
built June 1980. Info from Don Stracks 2000 Union Pacific Locomotive directory.
Same train, just playing with the camera settings a little.
4-axle locomotives are getting rarer on main lines like UP.
