These photos were taken the week of June 19-21, 2002.
I'll start with the Brinkley, Arkansas photos of three trains in only 30
minutes. A few others were taken in Alabama and Georgia.
UP4391, 501 p.m. southbound through Brinkley, Arkansas, June 21, 2002. Train
is passing the being-restored Rock Island depot in Brinkley. The unit number
in the middle is unknown.
Memphis-bound (north, then east) led by UP1816 gets ready to do some switching
in Brinkley, 510 pm, June 21. It starts around the eastbound curve in front
of the Brinkley depot.
After switching about 10 cars to the siding next to the elevators to the
left, UP1816 heads for Memphis around the curve about 515 pm. The old Rock
Island depot is to the right.
The eastbound freight as seen from the middle of the old Rock Island Sunbelt
main line looking east. I'm standing on the north side of the depot on some
of the still-present RI ties. .
UP9741, southbound through Brinkley, 531 pm, June 21. Could not read the CSX number, but the trailing UP unit is No. 203.
The top three were taken June 20, 2002, in Athens, Alabama in front of the
old L&N freight depot about 415 pm. The CSX lead unit is No. 6930. The
photo on the bottom right is on a tombstone in Fort Payne, Alabama.
The above six were taken in Georgia, June 19, 2002. The tracks on the upper
left were east-west through Perry, Georgia. Does anybody know which railroad
these belong to? The other five were taken in Tifton, Georgia, also on June
19. The red caboose is lettered Tifton Terminal Railway, which has it's office
in the restored L&N depot, now called the Atlantic Coastline Artists
Station. What is the Tifton Termianl Railway? Do they actually do any freight
switching or is it only a name of a museum? What is the origin of the passenger
car. I couldn't see any number on the car.
