Sunday,
June 8, 2003 at Union Station in Little Rock. Of most interest today was
SOO 6055 in a bright red. Also an interesting car you can help me identify.
We had a visitor, Michael Hibblen from Florida. For more current rail
photos, to go http://www.trainweather.com/sunday.html

LEFT-Empties. RIGHT-According to numerous replies to my asking what type
of car this is, it is a scale test car. Concrete is usually found underneath
the shell and the weight is known. Scales can then be calibrated using
this car. It's used to measure pulling forces(train tonnage) and possibly
in hump/yard service as well. According to Joe Enochs, it used to be
a MP car that UP "adopted" when they swallowed up the MP. It used to
be orange when MP had it. They also have a smaller scale test car that
is about 20' long and the same silver color. It used to be MKT green.
These cars make their way around the system when a scale needs to be verified.
I think the one you saw is not speed limited but the smaller one has a speed
restriction placed on it causing the train to stay below a certain speed. (Thanks to Charles Allen, Mike Gitlin, Jim Satterwhite, Randy Keller, Joe H Enochs, all on Railspot)
