On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 4 and 5, 2003, I made a trip to Nacogdoches, Texas and other spots to see what was still going on regarding the Space Shuttle Columbia's falling apart over Texas on February 1 while trying to land. What I found was hundreds of Texas state troopers, National Guard and media with some roads blocked while they were trying to find and move pieces of the shuttle. I didn't see any pieces myself since most that were readily viewable had been moved. The most moving part of the trip was the makeshift memorial in downtown Nacogdoches where that large piece of shuttle was seen on CNN and other news networks the night of February 1. Drove to Hemphill, Texas, on the Louisiana border. There were some roads closed and lots of National Guard people around, plus dozens of police cars. A lot of debris fell here.

The Upper Left photo shows the line of memorials layed on the sidewalk in downtown Nacogdoches with the other photos some closeups. The lower two shows a red marker where the large piece of the shuttle hit a parking lot . This lot is to the right of the memorials.
