The former Southern Pacific (Houston &Texas Central) depot at Burton, Texas was moved back to its original location a few years ago and is now in the process of becoming a museum.  I visited the site on Saturday, Ocrober 27, 2007 and talked with Susan Kiel and Harry Lee Stark (a retired long-time Southern Pacific employee) about the ongoing project. They are planning to be open on Saturdays after the first of the year (2008).

The Burton depot as viewed from Google Earth at eye altitude 1,735 feet. Google Earth still has the SP Railroad lined in (the black line) and the alignment seems to be pretty good. The depot is at lower-left near the Highway 390 sign and I've inserted 'Depot' at the site.
The depot is actually about 10 feet off its original site (10 feet further southwest)) due to an old cistern that they didn't want to cover with the depot.  Had it been at the original site, it would have almost been on the road. (Thanks to Harry Lee Stark for this information)

LEFT-View from the town of Burton. The depot is actually about 10 feet off its original site (10 feet further away from the camera than the original site) due to an old cistern that they didn't want to cover with the depot.  Had it been at the original site, it would have almost been on the road. Some of the displays inside. It's not open to the public yet, but plans are underway to open on Saturdays at some point in the future. It's a work in progress.
