I will try to update once a week or more. I do not quarantee getting every first-time abandonment notice, but I will try to. The latest abandonment proposal will be last on the list in most cases. The Docket numbers for each listing are posted. Only NEW requests for abandonments will be listed...no updates to previous filings. Also, it may be months or years before track is actually taken up on some of these proposals - these rulings only give the railroad the right to abandon.

These abandonment proposals have been printed in the Federal Register OR have come directly from the Surface Transportation Board. They will go in effect unless one of the following occurs: 1) an offer of financial assistance is received; 2) a request for public use of the land is received (for instance, rails-to-trails); 3) petitions to reopen the case is filed. Railroads, before they can file these "notices of exemption under CFR 1152 Subpart F," must certify that 1) no local traffic has moved over the line for at least 2 years; 2) any overhead traffic can be routed over other lines; 3) no formal complaint filed by a user is pending and; 4) environmental reports, historic reports, transmittal letter, newspaper publication, and notice to governmental agencies have been met.

IDAHO – UNION PACIFIC – To abandon and discontinue service over UP's Dry Valley Subdivision from milepost 23.90 to milepost 24.11, a distance of 0.21 miles, in Caribou County, ID. A final decision will be issued by April 5, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-33 (Sub-No. 227X, decided December 28, served January 5, 2005)

NEW JERSEY – NORFOLK SOUTHERN - To discontinue service over a 10.0-mile line of railroad between milepost WD-2.2 in Newark, NJ, and milepost WD-8.4 in Kearny, NJ (which is a segment of a branch line known as the Boonton line), and between milepost NK-4.3 and milepost NK-8.1 on the adjacent Newark Industrial Track in Essex and Hudson Counties, NJ. TENNESSEE – TENNESSEE RAILWAY COMPANY - To abandon a 14.04-mile line of railroad between milepost TE-27.96 at Nick's Creek and milepost  TE-42.00 at Devonia, in Anderson and Campbell Counties, TN. INDIANA – NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY CO. – To abandon an 8.60-mile line of railroad between milepost RK-130.00 at Converse, and milepost RK-138.60 at Hartford City, in Blackford County, IN. NORTH DAKOTA – BNSF - To abandon and discontinuance of service over a 8.00-mile line of railroad between BNSF milepost 0.00 near Sanborn, and milepost 8.00, near Rogers, in Barnes County, ND. MISSOURI - RAILROAD SWITCHING SERVICE OF MISSOURI, INC. - To abandon its entire line of railroad extending from a point of connection with Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NS) at or near Broad Street (milepost 0) to terminus at the publishing facility of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (milepost 1.89), a distance of 1.89 miles, in St. Louis, St. Louis County, MO. IOWA - UNION PACIFIC - To abandon a line of railroad, known as the Thornton Industrial Lead, from milepost 2.0 near Flint, IA to milepost 17.14 near Thornton, IA, a distance of 15.14
miles, in Cerro Gordo County, IA. The line includes the stations of Thornton, Swaledale, and Burchinal. A final decision will be issued by June 1, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-33 (Sub-No. 225X, decided February 23, served March 3, 2005)

OREGON - PORTLAND & WESTERN RAILROAD, INC. - To abandon a portion of its line of railroad that extends from milepost 17.10 to milepost 20.05, near the City of Hillsboro, in Washington County, OR. NORTH CAROLINA - ROCKY MOUNT AND WESTERN RAILROAD CO., INC - To abandon an approximately 4.7 miles of railroad from approximately milepost 134.8 at or near Momeyer to the end of the rail line at approximately milepost 139.5 at or near Spring Hope, in Nash County, NC. TENNESSEE - TENNESSEE RAILWAY COMPANY - Tennessee Railway Company (TNR), a wholly owned subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Railway Company, filed with the Surface Transportation Board a petition to abandon an approximately 27.01-mile line of railroad between milepost TE-0.95 near Oneida, and milepost TE-27.96 near Nicks Creek, in Scott County, TN. CALIFORNIA - SUNSET RAILWAY COMPANY - SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY RAILROAD COMPANY - SRY to abandon, and SJVR to discontinue service over, a 0.20-mile line of railroad, known as the Sunset Subdivision near Levee, between milepost 19.80 and milepost 20.00, in Kern County, CA. WASHINGTON - MOUNT VERNON TERMINAL RAILWAY COMPANY L.L.C - To abandon and discontinue service on the southern portion of its line of railroad between milepost 0.369 and milepost 1.172, in the City of Mount Vernon, in Skagit County, WA, a distance of 4,240 feet. effective on April 22, 2005. UTAH - UNION PACIFIC - To abandon a line of railroad, known as the Sugar House Branch, from milepost 0.0 near Roper to the end of the branch line at milepost 2.74 near Sugar House, a distance of 2.74 miles in Salt Lake County, UT. MASSACHUSETTS - BOSTON AND MAINE CORP - to discontinue service over a line of railroad known as the Mystic Wharf Branch, extending from milepost 0.0 to milepost 1.45 in Suffolk County, MA. KANSAS - BOOT HILL & WESTERN RAILWAY CO., L.C.  - To abandon a 15.8-mile line of railroad between milepost 0.0, at Bucklin, and milepost 15.8, at Wilroads, in Ford County, KS. Effective on May 5, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-927X, decided March 29, served April 5, 2005)

INDIANA - THE INDIANA RAIL ROAD COMPANY - To abandon a 2.44-mile portion of its Ellettsville Branch from milepost Q216.13 near Loesch Road to the end of the line at Ellettsville, milepost Q213.69, in Monroe County, IN. Effective on May 17, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-295 (Sub-No. 6X), decided April 6, served April 15, 2005)

MISSISSIPPI - COLUMBUS AND GREENVILLE RAILWAY COMPANY (C&G) - To acquire from the City of Greenwood (City) and operate approximately 2.99 miles of newly constructed bypass rail line, extending from C&G milepost 113.59 to C&G milepost 116.57, in Leflore County, MS. C&G's main line runs through the City. C&G intends to file for abandonment authority over a portion of that line, between milepost 112.67 and milepost 114.26, and, once abandonment has been authorized, it intends to deed the abandoned segment to the City for public use. C&G states that the City intends to deed the bypass track and attendant properties to it, which will be an equal exchange and allow the City to reach its goal of moving rail operations out of the City's central commercial area. NORTH DAKOTA - DAKOTA, MISSOURI VALLEY & WESTERN RAILROAD, INC - To abandon an approximately 32.3-mile portion of the McKenzie-Linton Line between milepost 13.0, a point south of Moffitt, Burleigh County, ND, and milepost 45.3, in Linton, Emmons County, ND. Effective on May 31, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-933X, decided April 22, served April 29, 2005)

WISCONSIN - WISCONSIN & SOUTHERN RAILROAD CO./ UNION PACIFIC - Union Pacific Railroad Company (UP) and Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Company (WSOR) have jointly filed a notice of exemption under 49 CFR 1152 Subpart F--Exempt Abandonments and Discontinuances of Service for UP to abandon and WSOR to discontinue service over a 4.4-mile line of railroad, known as the Central Soya Line, Harvard Subdivision, between milepost 85.5 in the City of Madison and milepost 89.9 in the City of Fitchburg, in Dane County, WI. Effective on June 1, 2005. ILLINOIS - UNION PACIFIC - To abandon a 9.87-mile line of railroad known as the Westville Industrial Lead, extending from milepost 164.87 at Villa Grove to the end of the track at milepost 155.0 near Broadlands, in Douglas and Champaign Counties, IL. NEBRASKA - UNION PACIFIC - To abandon a 0.74-mile portion of its Kearney Industrial Lead from milepost 3.01 to the end of the line at milepost 3.75, near Kearney, in Buffalo County, NE. Effective on June 3, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-33 (Sub-No. 224X, decided April 26, served May 4, 2005)

FLORIDA - FLORIDA EAST COAST RAILWAY, L.L.C. - To abandon a portion of its South Little River Branch Line, extending from milepost LR 13.0 to milepost LR 18.0, a distance of approximately 5 miles in Miami-Dade County, FL (the line). NORTH CAROLINA - ATLANTIC & WESTERN RAILWAY, L.P. - To abandon a 0.74-mile line of railroad extending from milepost 3.76 (V.S. 198+37) to milepost 4.50 (V.S. 237+47) in Jonesboro, Lee County, NC, constituting the easternmost portion of ATW's approximately 10-mile line between Cumnock and Jonesboro, NC. FLORIDA - FLORIDA EAST COAST - To abandon a 9.8-mile line of railroad  known as the Titusville Branch, extending from milepost TB 0.0 in Titusville to milepost TB 9.8 in Aurantia, in Brevard County, FL. ARIZONA - SAN PEDRO RAILROAD OPERATING COMPANY, LLC - To abandon approximately 76.2 miles of railroad in Cochise County, AZ, as follows:  (1) the Bisbee Branch, between milepost 1085.0 at Bisbee Junction and milepost 1090.6 at Bisbee, a distance of 5.6 miles; and (2) the Douglas Branch (a) between milepost 1097.3 near Paul Spur and milepost 1106.5 near Douglas, a distance of 9.2 miles, (b) between milepost 1055.8 near Charleston and milepost 1097.3 near Paul Spur, a distance of 41.5 miles, and (c) between milepost 1040.15 near Curtiss and milepost 1055.8 near Charleston, a distance of 19.9 miles. PENNSYLVANIA - PITTSBURG & SHAWMUT RAILROAD, LLC - To abandon a line of  railroad between milepost 22.0 south of Brookville in Jefferson County, PA, and milepost 62.0 in Mahoning in Armstrong County, PA, a distance of approximately 40.0 miles. The line includes the stations of Norman, Knoxdale, East Br., Coulter, Sprankle Mills, Mauk, Dora, Ringgold, Timblin, McWilliams, Putneyville, Oakland, Colwell, Reddco, Reedy, and Mahoning. CONNECTICUT - CONNECTICUT SOUTHERN RAILROAD, INC. - To abandon a 942-foot long stub-ended line of railroad extending from milepost 9.4 (Station 5673+42 on the north side of Colonial Drive) to the end of the line at milepost 9.6 (Station 5664+00), in Manchester, Hartford County, CT. PENNSYLVANIA - BUFFALO & PITTSBURGH RAILROAD, INC. - To discontinue service over a 40.0-mile portion of a line operated by BPRR between milepost 22.0 south of Brookville in Jefferson County, PA, and milepost 62.0 in Mahoning in Armstrong County, PA. Effective on July 29, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-369 (Sub-No. 5X, decided June 23, served June 29, 2005)

RHODE ISLAND - PROVIDENCE AND WORCESTER RAILROAD COMPANY - To abandon approximately 4.79miles of its lines of railroad, in Providence County, RI. The lines proposed for abandonment include: (1) a portion of P&W's branch line, known as the East Providence Branch (EP Branch), extending from the switch at milepost 5.53 near Dunnellen Road south to the end of the track at milepost 9.84 near Whipple Avenue in East Providence, a distance of approximately 4.31 miles; and (2) a portion of P&W's branch line, known as the East Junction Branch (EJ Branch), extending from milepost 0.48 at the north side of Dexter Road south to its connection with the EP Branch at milepost 0.0 north of Waterman Avenue in East Providence, a distance of approximately 0.48 miles. SOUTH CAROLINA - GREENVILLE COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION - To abandon approximately 11.8 miles of line, extending from milepost 0.0 in
Greenville, SC, to milepost 11.8 in Travelers Rest, SC (Northern Segment) and to discontinue service over 3.29 miles of line, extending from milepost AJK 585.34 in East Greenville, SC, to milepost AJK 588.63 in Greenville (Southern Segment). CALIFORNIA - MCCLOUD RAILWAY COMPANY - To abandon, and discontinue service over, certain rail lines described below. -  MCR proposes to abandon approximately 80 miles of rail line in Siskiyou and Shasta Counties, CA.\1\ The specific rail lines proposed for abandonment include: (1) A rail line between milepost 3.3 east of McCloud and the end of the track at milepost B-61 at or near Burney; (2) a rail line between milepost B-19 at or near Bartle and milepost B-31.4 at or near Hambone; (3) a rail line between milepost B-58 at or near Berry and milepost S-7 at or near Sierra; and (4) a rail line between milepost B-31.6 at or near Bear Flat and milepost P-3.93 at or near Pondosa. MCR also proposes to discontinue trackage rights over a BNSF Railway Company\2\ rail line between milepost 31.4 at Hambone and milepost 0.0 at Lookout Junction, a distance of approximately 31.4 miles in Siskiyou and Modoc Counties, CA.\3\ The lines include a station at Burney. MICHIGAN - MID-MICHIGAN RAILROAD, INC. - To discontinue service over a 1.50-mile line of railroad, extending from milepost 157.97 on MMRR's east-west rail line to the end of the line in Kent County, MI. NORTH CAROLINA - NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY CO - To abandon a 2.4-mile line of railroad between milepost R-124.2, and milepost R-126.6, located in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Effective on August 19, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-290 (Sub-No. 243X, decided July 11, served July 20, 2005)

SOUTH CAROLINA - NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY CO. - To abandon a 1.92-mile line of railroad between former milepost W 68.69 and former milepost W 70.61, in Spartanburg, SC. Effective on August 19, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-290 (Sub-No. 261X, decided July 11, served July 20, 2005)

MINNESOTA - BNSF - MINNESOTA COMMERCIAL RAILWAY COMPANY - BNSF to abandon, and MNNR to discontinue service over, a 0.67-mile line of railroad between milepost 7.19, a point approximately 100 feet north of Interstate Highway I-694 in White Bear Township, and milepost 6.52, a point approximately 50 feet north of Beam Avenue in Maplewood, in Ramsey County, MN. MARYLAND - CSX - To abandon an 8.54-mile line of railroad on its Southern Region, Huntington Division East, Georges Creek Subdivision, between milepost BAI 27.0 near Morrison and milepost BAI 18.46 at the end of the track near Carlos, in Allegany County, MD. SOUTH CAROLINA - NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY CO. - To discontinue service over a 9.8-mile rail line between milepost SB-12.20 at Foxville and milepost SB-22.00 at Hasskamp, in Sumter County, SC. CALIFORNIA - THE LOS ANGELES JUNCTION RAILWAY - To abandon a 0.46-mile line of railroad between LAJ milepost 2.21 and LAJ milepost 2.67, in Maywood, Los Angeles County, CA. Effective on September 30, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-682X, decided August 22, served August 31, 2005)

TENNESSEE - THE CINCINNATI, NEW ORLEANS AND TEXAS PACIFIC RAILWAY COMPANY - To abandon an approximately 1.1-mile line of railroad, extending from milepost 156.9-H to milepost 158.0-H in Rockwood, Roane County, TN.  The line traverses United States Postal Service Zip Code 37854, and serves the station at Rockwood, where CNOTP will continue to provide rail service. LOUISIANA - THE KCS RAILWAY COMPANY - To abandon a 3.16-mile line of railroad extending from milepost 144.64 to milepost 147.80, located near Winnfield, in Winn Parish, LA. Effective on October 4, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-103 (Sub-No. 18X, decided August 24, served September 2, 2005)

WEST VIRGINIA - CSX - To abandon a 17.51-mile line of its Southern Region, Huntington Division East, Fairmont Subdivision, between Barrackville, milepost BS 306.32, and Mannington, milepost BS 319.48, including the Dents Run Spur between milepost BSB 0.00 and milepost BSB 4.35, in Marion County,WV. GEORGIA - CSX - To abandon a 0.85-mile portion of its Southern Region, Atlanta Division, Gainesville Midland Subdivision, between milepost GGM 39.2 and the end of the track, milepost GGM 40.05, in Hall County, GA.  The line traverses U.S. Postal Service Zip Code 30501 and is within the station of Gainesville, GA. CALIFORNIA - SANTA CLARA VALLEY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY - To abandon all common carrier obligations over a 1.19-mile line of railroad, extending from milepost 16.30 to milepost 17.49 in Santa Clara County, CA (Industrial line), and a 2.77-mile line of railroad, extending from milepost 2.61 near Paseo Padre Drive to milepost 5.38 near Grimmer Boulevard in and near Fremont, Alameda County, CA (Milpitas line). A final decision will be issued by December 16, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-980X, decided September 12, served September 16, 2005)

WEST VIRGINIA - CSX - To abandon a 15.12-mile line of railroad on its Southern Region, Huntington Division East, Jarrolds Valley Subdivision, between Jarrolds Valley Junction, milepost CLP 0.0, and Clear Creek, milepost CLP 15.12, at the end of the track in Raleigh County, WV. effective on October 22, 2005. (STB Docket No. AB-55 (Sub-No. 661X, decided September 16, served September 22, 2005)

IOWA - GENERAL RAILWAY CORPORATION D/B/A IOWA NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD - DENIED REQUEST TO ABANDON - To abandon 17.05 miles of track between milepost 237.25 (Engineering Station 1593+95) west of Lake Park, IA, and milepost 252.3 (Engineering Station 886+81) west of Braaksma, IA, in Dickinson and Osceola Counties, IA. IANW states that there has been no local traffic on a portion of the line since it was purchased in 2001, and that there has been no local traffic on the remainder of the line since December 21, 2003.  Under 49 CFR 1152.50(b), “[a]n abandonment or discontinuance of service or trackage rights is exempt if the carrier certifies that no local traffic has moved over the line for at least 2 years . . . .”  Because there has been local traffic on the line during the 2 years prior to the filing of the notice, the line does not meet the 2-year out-of-service requirement and the proposed abandonment does not qualify for the exemption at 49 CFR 1152.50.  The notice will therefore be rejected.
