ACTIVE SHORTLINE RAILROADS OF ARKANSAS - 2002
LITTLE ROCK AND WESTERN
Below are two days worth of photographing the Little Rock & Western Railroad,
January 9 and January 14, 2002. This line runs from a junction with Union
Pacific in Little Rock westward to Perry, Arkansas (it's headquarters) then
continues west to Danville, Arkansas, the home of Wayne Farms, with it supplies
much of the grain used to feed chickens. The line is the old Rock Island
Choctaw route that ran from Memphis to Tucumcari, New Mexico through Little
Rock and Oklahoma City. The Little Rock & Western (LRWN) took over operations
of the line from Little Rock to Danville, Arkansas in the mid 1980s. The old Rock west of Danville was taken up in 1985 or so.
BELOW: Little Rock & Western westbound through Houston, Arkansas,
3 p.m., January 9, 2002, going uphill through town. It was returning
to Perry from its daily roundtrip to Little Rock. Houston and Perry are on
the old Rock Island s and has a major interchange with UP in North Little Rock.
It serves a feed mill in Danville and many days has over 35 cars. (Ken Ziegenbein photos)
BELOW: The following were taken Monday, January 14, 2002 and shows
the line west of Perry to Danville. I chased the daily train out of Perry,
taking digital stills and videotaping it on VHS-C at the same time. The first
photo is of the old Rock Island depot in Perry, still used by the LRWN for
storage - their office is across the tracks and is shown just above.
